Attilion Served Graceful Jazz Rock Fusion on Jazz Buzz Salihara 2017
One would think that rock is the polar opposite of jazz music. But it is not the case for Attilion, a band made up of Bowo C. (guitar), Mattheus (bass), and Josh (drum). They are known as a post rock band who combine progressive jazz and psychedelic elements into their music. During their show on last Saturday in Jazz Buzz Salihara 2017 series with the theme Jazz Sans Frontiéres 02, the band took over the stage to perform their unique composition for the audience. We were intrigued on how this band could combine rock and jazz, and after watching their performance we got a sense that nothing is impossible in this world. They performed compositions from their two albums titled It Must Be (2011) and Early Dawn (2015). Much to our surprise, these three musicians from Attilion come from different backgrounds. Bowo is an active church musician at IES South and he also teaches at Music Temple and Jakarta Intercultural School. While Mattheus is known as a bassist from a band called Kelakar. For your information, Kelakar is an experimental progressive band. Lastly, Joshua is a skilled drummer who usually plays samba, bossanova, swing jazz and traditional jazz.
During their performance, Attilion shared tidbits of information about their songs as well. It turned out that their inspiration is rather unusual. In one song called “Rise of Sophie’s Corpse”, they said that it was composed with zombies in mind. Another song was created after they were inspired by state, world and hell. The meaning behind their compositions are rather philosophical, than literal. Attilion performed songs like “Cursed Island”, “Tears”, “Saturn Fill”, “Ruined Leaders” and “Allowance”. They served smooth transitions between tracks and they also had an additional member who acted as the keyboardist. As Jazz Buzz Salihara 2017 will come to an end this weekend, you’d better catch the remaining performances from Arief Winanda & Pamuncak Mudo on Saturday, 25 February 2017 and Imanissimo on Sunday, 26 February 2017.
