Mongolia is known for its mountainous landscape, Genghis Khan as well as a serene getaway for those who seek peace and quietness. Who knew that there would be an international music festival called Playtime Festival that will take place from 6 – 8 July 2018? Established in 2002, Playtime Festival has hosted several prolific names in music that present various genres. This year, electronic duo from Bandung, Bottlesmoker will perform for the first time there. It adds to the duo’s international gigs which include an appearance at St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival Singapore, Zandari Festa in South Korea and Transmusicales in France from last year. Nobie and Angkuy that make up Bottlesmoker are slated to perform at the main stage on July 7th, 2018. They won’t be the only representative from Indonesia, as indie rock band Lightcraft will also take over the stage of Playtime Festival on the same date.
Attracting 100,000 and more crowd each year, this annual festival combines music and spirituality as its main attraction. Bottlesmoker will also collaborate with Mandala Yoga, a Mongolian yoga club for an ecstatic dance session from 6 – 8 July at Waldo Tent Area. This unique fusion between two different elements could only be seen on this festival. The celebration had invited international guests like he Radio Dept, Peter Hook & The Light, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Mono on previous editions. This year, rocker Ariel Pink is slated to headline the festival. Held for three days at Gachuurt, approximately 20km or 40 minutes drive from Mongolia’s capital city, Ulaanbaatar, Playtime Fest is predicted to attract visitors from China, South Korea as well as Russia. Bottlesmoker are honored for this experience, as Angkuy said, “We’re grateful to be able to expand and introduce our music in a more unpredictable way. Parakosmos album has given us more places to visit, in return it also gave us a lot of motivation to trust the excellence of local wisdom.”
“Parakosmos” sees Bottlesmoker infuse various Indonesian traditional instruments and cultures as the inspiration. Nobie added that as the first Indonesian representatives alongside Lightcraft, they would pave the way for other musicians from Indonesia to perform there. In conjunction with this occasion, Bottlesmoker also involve an aspiring photographer, Saska to document all of their activities in a project called “Outlab Trip 2018”.
