Whitenoir Serve Modern Grunge Tunes through Debut Single, “Sub-District”
Whitenoir, is a newly formed band based in Malang which began their journey from early 2017. They have just revealed their debut single called “Sub-District” on 26 Feburary 2017 and we would give you a little review of what it sounds like. The band is said to have a modern grunge that is influenced by the likes of Bush, Citizen or Milk Teeth. We listened to the song without listening first to those aforementioned bands to avoid bias judgement. The song opens with a strum of guitar the reminds you to the early days of Nirvana. The distorted guitar effect gives an umph to the song and makes it sound noisy. The vocals of Ekki Darmawan in this song showcases a rather more mellow side of him, when he usually prefers to utilize skramz in his other band, Shewn. There is also a fuzzy guitar twang in the background and all of these elements are shaped into a polished single. In a sense, it has a post-grunge appeal that Bush has. Melodically it’s pretty simple and does not require much complex and puzzling chords.
The band comprised of Ekki, Alle, Ade, and Helmi released this porject under a new independent record label based in Malang called Pop Flesh Records. “Sub-District” itself aims to interpret one’s worry about other people’s narrow-mindedness. “Sub-District tells about sarcasm of how an individual expresses his grief and sympathy to one’s narrow mindedness on agreeing with something and how someone could be easily manipulate the truth to his own benefit. However, we basically let our listeners to interpret the meaning behind this song with their own versions. Through many considerations, we decided to pick “Sub-District” to be the first track released from our EP,” explains Ekki. Moreover, Whitenoir have launched their debut single through a host of digital streaming services. Whitenoir are currently producing their first EP and it will be titled “Feed Me” consisting of four tracks. Listen to their single “Sub-District” below.
