Coldiac Executes Solid Concept with Heartbreaker Album
Coldiac was reborn a year ago and since then they were busy making their first album came true. We said reborn, mainly because this band from Malang was formerly known as Piratez. Since ditching the old format, Coldiac applies new concept, visual, and sound to the whole package. It was not an easy task, proven by how long it took to put out their debut album. In December 2016, the long awaited album has been launched at last and it is titled Heartbreaker. We’ll try our best to dissect this album and give our honest review about it. The album opens with an intro song called “Doors” and with mostly instrumental and little vocal, the track gives a little glimpse of what the whole album will sound like. It incorporates a little electro touch, with indie rock as the core and we could feel the sultry and sensual vibe underneath it.
Hereafter we do not review track by track from this album, but we’ll judge the record as a whole. The songs in this album range from down to mid-tempo, nothing too fast that it induces crowd surfing. Coldiac really knows their market and their target listeners, and proceeds to craft songs around this particular taste. Many people compare Coldiac’s sounds to The 1975, while in some part we may find similarities like the sensual concept down to the groovy bassline, we also find that Coldiac tries to hon their own sound. In some tracks, we could hear saxophone playing and it does not feel out of place. Instead it adds something different to some tracks that could have felt too plain. “Look Around” and “Don’t You Cry” are two songs that have a little saxophone in them.
The execution for Heartbreaker album, both aesthetically and musically are coherent. The tracklist for example, is like a rollercoaster of one’s love life. There are lovey-dovey themed songs like “Love”, “That Was You” and “Look Around”, then heartbreak and depression theme kick in some tracks like “Heartbreaker”, “I Hate You”, “Liquor” and “Please”. Listening to Heartbreaker album is like secretly reading a diary of secret lovers when their relationship is hidden. We could feel a sheer of guilt, fear, but also a lot of pleasure and love. “Take You Out” and “Upside Down” sound lyrically naughty and we like that Coldiac are open to talk about sex and love so explicitly. Since the songs are mostly on the similar tempo, they could be a little monotonous or dull to be listened repeatedly. Overall, the solid theme and concept of Heartbreaker proves that a long process it took did not disappoint. Grab the album on iTunes or stream it through Spotify.
