Dialogue with The SensesThe 4th Korea – Indonesia Media Installation Art: Dialogue with The Senses, An Art Exhibition That Tingles All of Human Senses

Dialogue with The Senses is an art exhibition that is held under the program of The 4th Korea – Indonesia Media Installation Art and is also a part of K-Festival that happens throughout October. In this exhibition, visitors are not only entertained in the sight department, the installations also tingle your hearing, taste, touch, and smell. It features contemporary art from nine artists hailing from Korea and Indonesia and curated by Jeong Ok-Jeon, who has involved in several curation and handling of art exhibitions in Paris, Seoul, Venetia, Brisbane, Bangkok, Washington D.C. and Jakarta.

Dialogue with The SensesWe headed to Galleria Fatahillah on Sunday (10/29) to join the gallery tour and sightsee all the installations they displayed. The installations encouraged the visitors to interact with the art directly. Through the interaction, we could appreciate the art, understand and somehow, the essence that the artists want to convey was delivered. Some of the exhibits were intriguing like the work of Indonesian artist, Fajar Abadi who display two kinds of candles, when burned they emitted two aromas of Indonesian dish “Sop Ayam” or chicken soup and Korean dish “Doenjang Jjigae” or fermented soybean soup. The smell tingled our sense, and reminded us instantly of home.

Anang Saptoto brought an art installation that plays with optical illusion, perspectives and visibility. This time he was inspired by Asian Games 1962, in which many documentations from the event were then turned into art installation. Elia Nurvista presents an artwork that you can taste which is a sculpted sugar that looks so beautiful like it was a piece of crystal. Her installation presents her reinterpretation of colonial history intertwined with ‘sugar’. Sweet and bitter at the same time, and through her work we could learn the history of our nation. The artworks from Lee Hyerim with her 3D animation called “Obsession/Love Forever”, Heri Dono with “The Trio Angels”, Ricky ‘Babay’ Janitra with video mapping “Illogical Room” and Park Seung Soon’s installation called “Aquaphonics V2” are no less captivating than the others we have mentioned. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching those artworks.
