Emotive Unit, Hulica Debut with Single “and on that day, our captain went off the deck”
Another post dedicated for the growing emo revival genre and now we are ready to welcome a new act hailing from Bandung, Hulica. Hulica are formed by Djodi Fauzan Rachman (vocal/bass), Erwin Zakaria (guitar/vocal) and Dimaz Ramadhan Putra (drum) and they focus on math-rock/emo genre. On 15 June 2017, the band reveal their first ever single called “and on that day, our captain went off the deck”. The music arrangement for this single infuse the element of math rock with twinkly guitar sound and high note riffs. Starting with spoken words, the single turns into a reckless kind of song with non conventional melodies pattern that might catch you off guard. The 4 minute single is said to mix the influence from Japanese indie rock with math-rock progression a la American emo sounds. On the ears of average listeners who rarely listen to any math rock tunes, Hulica’s first single might be a little difficult to swallow for its irregular drum beats and a little out of pitch vocal. But it’s the guitar progression that draws us in and it might show a promising sound from the band in the future.
The track “and on that day, our captain went off the deck” tells about a figure who went away from someone’s life forcing him/her to build a new hope. Judging from the very sad lyrics, the song teaches us to not giving all of our love for someone, especially it that person does not give anything in return. The single will be included in the band’s upcoming EP which will be released at the end of 2017. It also becomes the first release from Hulica which has gone through mixing and mastering process after launching their demo EP back in 2016. The single was first premiered exclusively on the website of Jakarta-Bekasi’s based media, Holytunes. Starting from 19 June 2016, the song could be accessed via Hulica’s Bandcamp account. The physical release of the song which is included in the demo EP along with two other songs, “pokémon hype club” and “axonica’s house” on CD-R format can be ordered via e-mail to hulicamail@gmail.com.
