Oscar Lolang Releases Epilogue EP in Cassette Tapes for Record Store Day 2017
Folk singer, Oscar Lolang, is one of the musician that celebrates Record Store Day this year. To make it even more festive, Lolang and his record label, Karma Records plan to release his debut EP “Epilogue” in a cassette tapes format. Prior to this release, Oscar Lolang has revealed his EP in CD and digital format. The day to celebrate physical releases this year falls at 21st to 22nd of April and Karma Records collaborate with Loka Analog Records, a DIY record label from Bandung for this release. Beforehand the label has released an album called “Revival” from Temaram, duo doom metal from Yogyakarta. Arya as the representative from Loka Analog Records said that he actually had no idea about the singer before watching his live performance which bewitched him. While another representative from the same label, Sopian Permana stated that the comparison between Oscar Lolang to the legendary Bob Dylan or Nick Drake was overwhelming, nonetheless Oscar still manages to bring back the classic folk revival in Indonesia.
“The plan to release this cassette has been there since early this year. We have been waiting the coming of Record Store Day. It is coincidentally happening closely after the launching of mini album ‘Epilogue’. We’re pretty happy and excited to join RSD 2017, considering that this is the first time for us to participate,” utters Dimas Randhan, the music producer of Karma Records. Fans are in for a treat if you buy this cassette, since there is an additional track added to the cassette version. The CD of ‘Epilogue’ only contains two tracks which are “Little Sunny Girl” and “The Way She Does Things”. A new romantic track called “Barbara Allen” has been chosen to fill in “Epilogue”. It is a traditional English folk song that has been sung and covered by many musicians. “When I first knew the song ‘Barbara Allen’ I instantly felt the flashback to the end of 1500 era in England. The era of Shakespeare, not only that, I also felt thrown to a real tragic love story that is beautifully told on the lyrics. The song in my version is not the original lyrics from that song (since it’s a traditional song so it’s hard to make sure) but this version is my favorite,” explains Oscar Lolang about the new song.
The cassette tapes will be pressed in very limited 100 copies which will be sold during Record Store Day 2017 at Kuningan City Jakarta and Keep Keep Music Bandung. It costs for IDR60,000 and comes with official merchandise like buttoned pin and sticker. Oscar Lolang will also do live performance at Kuningan City Jakarta on 21 April 2017 as one of the RSD 2017 line up. If you’re looking for a great folk musician on the rise, you might want to cop his album or watch him live.
