Concept of Self Exhibition“The Concept of Self” Exhibition Opens Today at Galeri Salihara!

JAKARTA (1/19) – Samuel Huntington, a scholar of politics and culture once theorized that as the world goes global, everything becomes more homogenous. Human will once again restore to their roots and identities, as a fighting mechanism to eradicate homogenization of culture. As the phenomenon is still relevant today, an exhibition called “The Concept of Self: individuality and integrity” that focuses on “self-concept” will be held at Galeri Salihara. Eight artists hailing from Indonesia and Thailand are invited to present their works and interpretations of ‘self-concept’. Are their identities shift when political change is happening? Do social-political issues affect their works as an artist? Do they incorporate outer influence into their artworks? All of those notions will be presented in this exhibition. The exchange program between Thai and Indonesian artists on this occasion enables them to explore the influence of political shifts within respective countries, especially that happened in the ’90s.

The shifts forced these artists to develop their artistic selves and their integrities as a response towards societies. Not only visually pleasing, but the exhibition will also tinge all other senses. It will provide a medium of reflection for these artists as well as the onlookers on how they personally value themselves and others within society. Fully supported by the Embassy of The Kingdom of Thailand for Indonesia, the event opens today and officiated by H.E. Songpol Sukchan, the Ambassador of The Kingdom of Thailand for Indonesia. The exhibition will last from 20 January until 3 February 2019 at Galeri Salihara, Pasar Minggu, Jakarta. The artists that participated in this exhibition are Antonio S. Sinaga (ID), Chayanin Kwangkaew (TH), Chulayarnnon Siriphol (TH), Kitikun Mankit (TH), Patriot Mukmin (ID), Theo Frids Hutabarat (ID), Thidarat Chantachua (TH), and Rega Ayundya Putri (ID).
