Efek Rumah Kaca, KimoKal, and Rich Brian Represent Indonesia on SXSW 2018
Another year means another installment of South By South West (SXSW). The annual tech,media, music, and film conference in Austin, Texas host a series of events that become a platform for networking, sharing, and showcasing the next big thing. Powered by Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy (IACE), Indonesia will have the chance to showcase our country’s finest startups and techs as well as musicians through Archipelageek. Archipelageek is Indonesia’s pavilion that can be visited by SXSW’s visitors and of course they have to make it as attractive as possible to generate more audience. This year, there will be performances from Efek Rumah Kaca, Rich Brian, and KimoKal. The announcement of Indonesian acts who will perform at the festival came as surprise, especially when Rich Brian (formerly known as Rich Chigga) got involved. Previously, there was rumor regarding Stars and Rabbit’s involvement at the festival before it was debunked by IACE’s official announcement. Efek Rumah Kaca realized their long time dream by performing at SXSW. The indie band also try to generate more buzz and saving by holding “Dukung Kami Ke Panggung SXSW”. It is an initiative in which the band are ready to perform anywhere they are invited from 18 February to 3 March 2018, in order to make their meet ends before going to SXSW.
Meanwhile, KimoKal, the electronic duo that consists of Kimo Rizky and Kalula Harsynta have recently held a tour in Japan from 9 to 11 February 2018. Their SXSW 2018’s participation became another milestone for the band which have released one full lenght album called “O”. Rich Brian is another sensation from our country after he went viral with his single “Dat Stick”. Since then, under his label, 88 Rising, Rich Brian has created a goofy and comical rapper persona that make people fall in love with him. He has made it into media heavyweights like Pitchfork, XXL Magazine, SPIN, and LA Times for his latest album “Amen”. For startup and tech category, Indonesia will send Minikino, Kata.ai, Seruniaudio, Saft7robotics, Sculine, Mycotech, and Vestifarm as representatives. Last year, according to ANTARA, Indonesia was represented by GO-JEK, Pic Mix, Blibli among many others with indie band Lightcraft as the only musical representative. Our future doesn’t seem so bleak after all with these names as our representatives at SXSW 2018!
