How Jazz Are You? Prove Your Enthusiasm by Joining Jazz Buzz Salihara 2018 : Jazz Sans Frontiéres 03
Indonesia is home to a myriad of jazz festivals and you can pick from so many events to attend in a year. One of them is Jazz Buzz Salihara 2018 which is held annually since its first creation in 2012. Jazz Buzz Salihara has been staying true to jazz music and its derivatives by inviting seasoned jazz musicians like I Wayan Balawan, Tohpati, Indra Lesmana, Dewa Budjana to perform there. Newcomers in jazz, like Monita Tahalea or Tesla Manaf have also shown their take on this music genre which originated from the African-American communities in United States. It is not Jazz Buzz if it’s not a little bit unconventional. The main concept of this event is showcasing a rare breed of jazz that never or seldom been shown to the public. Take an example from Jazz Buzz Salihara 2017, when you could witness the fusion between jazz and progressive rock. This year with the ongoing theme of Jazz Sans Frontiéres III, the festival will present a cross generation of jazz musician that will break the traditional norm of jazz.
For starters, there will be Trio Ligro that consist of Agam Hamzah (guitar), Adi Darmawan (bass) and Gusti Hendi (drum). Starting out their journey in 2004, the band improvise their music as many as we change clothes on daily basis. Their wild combination of ideas and wide influences result in a freestyle jazz that might confuse those who religiously enjoy the traditional jazz. In addition, Trio Ligro have also released a new album recently. Another band called Trodon that is made up of Biondi Noya (electric guitar), Irene Pattinaya (keyboard), Nadya Romanenta (alto saxophone, flute), Aprila Sitompul (bass) and Peter Lumingkewas (drum) present a progressive rock-jazz combination in which they are inspired by video games music and classical musicians.
During this series, the band will present music that is inspired by legend and myths. While Mirak Div, a collaboration between John Navid (drum, percussion) and Adra Karim (piano, keyboard) are ready to enchant you with their experimental take on jazz. Last but not least, guitar legend Dewa Budjana will collaborate with string section quartet, vibraphone, and electric drum to present a whole new composition that has never been performed on previous editions. The events will take place in two weekends in February. See the more detailed schedule of performances below and don’t forget to grab the tickets here.
