Soft Blood Channel Vintage Asian Aesthetic on “Epitaph” MV
If you’re a fan of Wong Kar Wai’s work, then maybe you’ll notice that the new visual from Soft Blood took a note or two from the famous Hong Kong filmmaker. For their latest single “Epitaph”, the dream pop five piece from Bandung can be seen out and about in Bandung in settings that took place at Chinatown of the city. Almost all elements in this music video are set out in a vintage East Asian flair, showing colors which are identical with Asian culture like red, yellow, and white in sepia tone as its finishing touch. Mirza P. Wardhana (vocal and guitar), Surya Fikri Asshidiq (drum), Rizal Taufikkurohman (guitar), Dini Lestari (bass), and Andri Cahyaningtyas (synth) produced a newly arranged “Epitaph” that is taken from their upcoming EP that will be released next year. Throughout 2017, the band are busy preparing and recording their mini album which is planned to be released under Misashi Records in the first quarter of 2018. The concept for the video itself talks about waiting for someone that never shows up. “This song tells about waiting for someone, but I keep the lyrics hanging. The girl on the song might come or not,” said Mirza.
Over a jangly guitar sound, Soft Blood talks about love in a subliminal manner and love seems to be their go-to topic as it was also apparent on their previous single “The Shangri-la’s Journey”. The process of waiting for someone could be tiresome as it is shown on the scenes from this video. “Epitaph” MV was directed by Surya Fikri Asshidiq who is also the drummer of the band. He takes his interpretation into his work. “The music video of Soft Blood tells about people who do not know each other and do not relate in one way or another, but they have the same worry, which is waiting. I made the setting as Asian as possible, because I want to show Asian stereotype or tendency, especially Indonesian who take time for granted and always keep other people waiting,” he explains. The video really looks cool and we like the sense of direction the band are going with this. Watch “Epitaph” MV below!
