Museum MACAN : The Most Exquisite Contemporary Art Museum in Indonesia Stuns with “Art Turns. World Turns” Exhibition
It has been a dream for every art enthusiasts in Indonesia to have an establishment as stellar as Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, US or National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, France. Now that dream is no longer a fantasy since the arrival of Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara or abbreviated as Museum MACAN. Since 4 November 2017, the first modern and contemporary museum gave access to the public to see its collection. They display not only renown Indonesian artists’ artworks, but also artworks from international artists. Museum MACAN’s first exhibition is called “Art Turns. World Turns” and it will be opened until 18 March 2018. During its opening day, Museum MACAN presented Aaron Seto as the Director of the museum as well as Fenessa Adikoesoemo as the Chairwoman of Museum MACAN Foundation. Aaron Seto gave a brief explanation about what the museum is, what purpose it serves and the goals that the museum aims to achieve.
While Fenessa Adikoesoemo told about the background story on how this museum came to life. She did not hesitate to tell that it has been a decade long dream from her father, as an art collector to build a platform to display the artworks for the public. . “As well as the exhibited works that have been collected over a period of 25 years, the Museum will be a cultural center dedicated to learning and education, and a place that will establish itself as an integral part of Indonesia’s development as a nation”, she said during her speech. She also shared that in the span of 25 years, her father managed to gather over 800 collections from both local and international artists and through the exhibition that has been planned by the foundation, we would be able to get a glimpse of those artworks. In conjunction with the museum’s opening, they also officiated “Children’s Art Space”, a dedicated platform in the museum to educate children about art and acts as a medium for them to get to know art since early age. Artworks from Entang Wiharso could be seen in this area and they touch the subject of environment, ecology, and permaculture.
