Social Media and Art on “PopArt Culture”, A Report from PechaKucha Night Jakarta Vol.30
PechaKucha Jakarta returned for its 30th installment, bringing different topic than before. With the theme of “PopArt Culture”, the event was held in 22 August 2017 at BINUS International University Auditorium, FX Mall F6 Jl. Jenderal Sudirman, Jakarta. Seven speakers were invited to share their opinion, experience, and idea as artists or curators from Indonesia. It focused on the topic of the development of art in the era of social media. Those seven speakers are: Nin Djani from Suar ArtSpace; Atreyu Moniaga, an ilustrator; Wangsit Firmantika, a young artist from Indonesia; Evelyn Huang an independent curator who has gained acknowledgment from her exi(s)t exhibition; Kendra Ahimsa, a graphic designer; Safrie Effendi, an Art Manager from an iconic hotel in Jakarta, Artotel Indonesia; and Thepopo a mural artist from Indonesia.
As the host of PechaKucha Night Jakarta and the advisor of Maverick Indonesia, Wicaksono or also known as Ndoro Kakung, took his chance to tell the audience “Artwork is no longer consumed by a small part of our society in particular place, like a gallery. Artwork can also now be enjoyed by public in a common place, and it bred an appreciation culture like a selfie that is spread through social media.” The event was followed by discussion session with Q&A from the audience for the seven speakers. Ndoro Kakung hoped that this series of PechaKucha could inspire any individual who wants to do art in here. The seven speakers also gave supporting messages as well as encouragement for young talents to believe in themselves. Social media gave a wide reaching platform for those who want to showcase their art to anyone anywhere in the world. Next edition of PechaKucha Night Jakarta is hoped to get engaged with more communities.
