Jazz Gunung Bromo 2017 aims to unify Indonesia with jazz music
(8/18) Jazz Gunung Bromo 2017 has held its first day of celebration with stunning performances from Surabaya Allstar, Paul McCandless & Charged Particles, Monita Tahalea, Dewa Budjana and Maliq & D’essentials. Butet Kertaradjasa, Djaduk Ferianto and Sigit Pramono came together to give a press conference about the event. With the theme “Merdekanya Jazz Meneguhkan Indonesia”, Butet Kertaradjasa wanted this festival to be a unifying platform for our country. The current situation of our social and political landscape endanger our ancestor’s vision of a diverse country. Sigit Pramono said, “Jazz (music) is the most free genre without boundaries.”
In its 9th installment of Jazz Gunung Bromo, the organizer is pretty optimistic about the future that lies ahead. Starting from roughly 300 hundreds audience on its first edition, now the festival could generate more than 2.000 spectators. Butet as one of the founder of the festival explained that this positive result was partly affected by the audience, sponsor and media roles. “Many cultural based products do not make sense in terms of profit. Sponsors play a large role in making it happen and they want to sponsor us because it’s trustworthy,” added Butet.
Starting out the event using the founders’ personal funds, the attraction now become one of the most awaited annual jazz festival in the country. Each year, they try to increase the quantity and quality of performers, audience, and space to accommodate a better festival experience. Sigit also hinted that since they cannot add more space to Amfiteater Jiwa Jawa Resort Probolinggo, the solution is adding more dates. Next year’s Java Jazz Bromo is planned to be held in three days at the end of July. The ticket was available to be pre-ordered at the venue. Can’t wait to see what Jazz Gunung Bromo has to offer in 2018!
