Suara Suara Mati by Teater Populer Shows a Conflict Between Heart and Mind
Teater Populer aim to tackle the relativity of truth and interpreted the theme into one of their play called Suara Suara Mati. On Wednesday, November 30th 2016 we came to see the rehearsal of the play at Galeri Salihara and we were drowned in sea of feelings and questions. Suara Suara Mati was directed by Indonesia’s seasoned actor, Slamet Rahardjo and it was adapted from a story titled “Dode Klanken” by Manuel Van Loggem, a Dutch literary author and critic. The play was emphasizing on how humans process their bittersweet experience which have its own voice. Those voices sometimes turned into truth that was cemented in our minds, while some other times they became a justification of our actions and feelings.
The whole notion was summed up in an interaction between a husband and a wife which experienced a love tragedy. They had to question their own feelings and faith about themselves and each other. They were trapped in jealousy which has been crystalized and rooted deep inside their minds and hearts. Every action, argument and thought they had, were developed into a wild imagination about death. They became paranoid with every echo of those voices that haunted them, and it sucked every last drop of their self-confidence. The appearance of the ‘bestfriend’ character did not make their relationship better, since he has developed the feeling of more than friends.

Slamet Rahardjo who also acted as the husband in the play, showed his class act and other actors who were the pupils of Teater Populer proved that they grasped the roles perfectly. The whole cast of the play included Artasya Sudirman who acted as the wife, Jack Rachadian who played the role of Aryo – the bestfriend, and also Eduwart Manalu, Riskia Ramadhina, Dicky Kurniawan, David Hagler, Adriel Situmorang, and Zamilia Sukardi. Moreover, by showing the stage to the public, Teater Populer which was founded in 1968 by Teguh Karya wanted to embrace a wider crowd to join their creative studio. The theatrical collective wish to share their passion about theaters to potential actors that will be a part of their team. Suara Suara Mati was an enjoyable yet intriguing play which demonstrated well-acted actors, great stage decorations and choreography. It managed to stir the emotion of the viewers with their dialogue, plots and theatrical performance.
