Matahari – The Sun of Tiganderket: Preserving Masri Singarimbun’s Legacy through Film

[JAKARTA] Masri Singarimbun is a name that is highly unlikely to ring a bell within those who are in their 20s. However, a quick search will reveal his rich and enduring legacy in Indonesia. Prof. Dr. Masri Singarimbun, Hon. LLD, was a renowned social anthropologist who specialized in the traditions of the Batak Karo people. According to his alma mater, Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta, his work spanned various fields, including social demography, anthropology, and development studies. He was known as an inspiring individual with immense empathy toward his colleagues and the communities he studied.

To preserve his legacy and contributions to society and the Indonesian people at large, his foundation, the Masri Singarimbun Foundation (MS Foundation), produced a documentary film titled Matahari – The Sun of Tiganderket. The film is the result of extensive research based on rare documents, archives, photo collections, and testimonies from family members, close friends, colleagues, and students who knew Masri personally, as well as other credible sources. This documentary is beautifully crafted, featuring compelling narration supported by strong cinematography and a well-structured storyline.

Having lived through both the pre- and post-independence eras of the Republic, Masri led his life as an exemplary patriotic figure. He demonstrated his deep devotion to the country through his studies, ideas, and publications. In this film, viewers can see how his legacy continues to shape the lives of his descendants.

Matahari – The Sun of Tiganderket has received recognition at several international film festivals, including:
