Review: T2 Trainspotting Sees More Mature and Responsible Characters with A Recurring Plot Twist

“First there was an opportunity then there was a betrayal.” The quote can pretty much describe the ending of the first installment of Trainspotting in which Renton betrayed his friends by running away with 16,000 Poundsterling, the money the gang got from drug dealing. The event that happened 20 years ago is later continued with the new story on “T2 Trainspotting” which is released in 2017. Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle as the original casts of the first series reunited once again with no less interesting plot. Renton (Ewan McGregor) decides to return to his hometown at Edinburgh, England to give back the money that he ran away with 20 years ago. He tries to reach out to his former mates Spud (Ewen Bremmer), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) and Begbie (Robert Carlyle), the ones who he has betrayed. Renton who has a pretty decent life in Amsterdam finds out that his friends are still living the lives that are close to crime and drugs. One by one, they appear by bringing their own bleak tales. Renton later on got together with Sick Boy and his girlfriend Veronika from Bulgaria to do various crimes.

Relying upon nostalgic moments from the first movie of Trainspotting, Danny Boyle as the director manages to put the pieces back together in an elegant way. It also bring back memories from the first movie that the audience miss so much. With the same director and casts, it successfully presents an enjoyable feature for the old fans or the new ones to watch. This film is still based on the character from Irvine Welsh’ novel “Trainspotting” and its follow up “Porno”. T2 Trainspotting sees a more mature characters who are mostly ‘sober’ and how they become responsible with their own lives. It also got a recurring plot twist that might reminds you a lot with the first one. Danny Boyle still emphasizes on his style of unique shooting and angles like the first one, and the soundtrack is still as epic as ever. “Lust For Life” by Iggy Pop, “Silk” by Wolf Alice, “Get Up” by Young Fathers, up to “Radio Ga Ga” by Queen can be heard throughout the movie. Well, if you love and miss Trainspotting, T2 Trainspotting is a must watch movie you should not miss out. “Choose life!”
