[JAKARTA] The legend behind the deck, DJ Jidho, decided this year would be the perfect time to put out an original single and he enlists the help of rapper/soloist Ezra Kunze for debut song “SUGARCANE”. Released under Pon Your Tone, the single is a groovy old-school R&B with smooth and slow combination of Ezra’s rap and vocals going back and forth. The impeccable choice of sample made the song feels even more nostalgic. It reminds us to a love child between D’Angelo, Mac Miller, Jack Harlow and Maxwell, which is a great thing to be compared to.
“Yeah, it’s long overdue for me to have my own single that I arrange myself after more than 10 years of creating music remixes and edits on SoundCloud. I challenged myself to deliver a different kind of satisfaction as a musician,” uttered Jidho. The song started off with a sample that Jidho discovered and then Fathan Maulana added an old-school R&B beat to it. Ezra came and made the track whole with his sultry and sensual lyrics. Greybox also gave his final touch as the mixing and mastering engineer.
“SUGARCANE” tells the story of a man drawn to a woman who captivates his attention and transforms his everyday life into something more exciting. Instead of using the common terms like ‘honey’, ‘sugar’, or ‘cupcake’ to describe the delicate sweetness of a lady, they chose the more familiar local crop which is sugarcane and bravo for that. Albeit containing metaphors, the lyrics are pretty digestible and straightforwardly sensual.
It is said that the two have known each other for so long, so it only makes sense that this collaboration flows so well. Paired with an artwork portraying the two riding a silver convertible sports car, it really screams early 2000 R&B era. Moreover, Jidho hopes to be able to play his own track in future sets and introduce this new single to a wider audience. While we could not step into the dancefloor or visit one of his set anytime soon, blasting “SUGARCANE” for a private sexy time would suffice, right? Enjoy the song on various streaming services.
