The Energizing Spirit from Milkbox Showcase at Spasial Bandung

On 15 April 2017 that fell on Saturday, was a day full of happiness for us because since a week ago we heard the news about the coming from an indie rock band hailing from Bekasi, Barefood. They held their first showcase for their newest album “Milkbox” in Bandung. Shortly before their gig in Bandung, Barefood have held an album launching last March in Jakarta. In the midst of rain, we arrived at Spasial to attend their event called Milkbox Showcase by Barefood that was held by Norrm in collaboration with Spasial warehouse. Besides Barefood, there were Wreck, Sunny Summer Day, and Secret Meadow as the openers. Per usual, the event held in Spasial bared no barriers between the performers and the audience. There was only a warm light for the stage and music instruments with sound system that were arranged in the middle of the venue.

Sunny Summer day opened the celebration and the indie pop band from Bandung played a simple tunes form their album “Traveled Backwards” that was released in 2016. Their songs like “Unpopular”, “Colours of Fantasy”, “In Summertime” and “Deep River Goodbye” brought us back to the 90’s pop vibe. It reminded us of the bands under Sarah Records or Pitchfork. Wreck continued the stage and they offered an emo revival tunes. The band which is fronted by Acil performed songs from their latest EP as well as previous albums. Their distinctive emo sound is interpreted through songs like “O’Heaven”, “I Am Bored”, “Tanpa Tuan”, “Yang Terbuang” and many more. Being in awe, we have come into conclusion that Wreck is one of the best emo revival band from Bandung.

Secret Meadow who could be seen preparing for their stage, caught our attention with their indie pop/rock tunes and during their set, they played all the songs from their debut EP “Same Old Fear”. They drew us right away to their music with their sweet rendition of the songs on their album. Last but not least, Barefood who are made up of Rachmad Triyadi and Ilham Pradwito hit the stage at Spasial. We could not stand to miss the chance to see this band from the front row so we headed there right away. Their latest album “Milkbox” is a critically acclaimed piece that was released under Anoa Records on March. The band started to play the songs in the album and we have been waiting to see them perform “Amelie”, one of the best track on the album according to us. The audience sang loudly to the tunes as before we entered the venue, lyrics sheet from Milkbox album were handed out. As if the songs from “Milkbox” could not satisfy the gig goers, Barefood added two more songs “Teenage Daydream” and “Perfect Colour” from their 2015 album “Sullen”. As their set came to an end, it gave us more energy to dance in the moshpit and jumped around. It was one of the warmest, most intimate gig we have attended in the month of April.
