Indra Perkasa & Gadgadasvara Ensemble Showed A Mighty Performance on Jazz Buzz Salihara 2017
Jazz Buzz Salihara 2017 has been opened with a fine performance from Andre Dinuth on Saturday, 11 February 2017. Indra Perkasa & Gadgadasvara Ensemble followed suit on the next day and we had the chance to enjoy his performance at Teater Salihara that started at 8PM. Indra Perkasa & Gadgadasvara Ensemble are a group with a medium ensemble format that play experimental jazz music. The group comprised of Indra Perkasa on bass, with the members of Gadgadasvara Ensemble who are Dimas Pradipta (drum), Adra Karim (keys), Dion Janapria (guitar), John Navid (percussion), Windy Setiadi (accordion), Debora Jamadu (vocal), Brury Effendy (trumpet), Donny Koeswinarno (flute, saxophone tenor), and Bonny Buntoro (baritone saxophone, clarinet bass). Indra Perkasa himself is a renown composer whose work mostly focuses on film scoring. With the ensemble, he creates original composition and arrangements from existing songs.
During their performance that night, they showcased jazz music with a taste of Indonesia. Some of you might have called it Indonesiana, and it also got a nice folk element to it since they also performed traditional songs with jazz arrangement. Balinese, Javanese and also Flores musical elements appeared on their music. Debora as a native Manggarai citizen performed songs called “Kiong” and “Totondeng”, folk songs from her hometown in Indra Perkasa’s refreshing arrangement. A rather unfortunate thing happened while they were performing an original piece called “Maestro”. Adra Karim played the keyboard too enthusiastically and resulted in the breakdown of the keyboard holder. Being a professional musician, he kept on going while holding the keyboard and managed to finish the performance. All of them laughed it out in the end, and the audience also burst out laughing upon seeing the accident. Indra Perkasa & Gadgadasvara Ensemble displayed an easy listening jazz tunes that even a non-avid jazz fans could enjoy and appreciate.
