It was announced back in April that Mouly Surya‘s latest work “Marlina The Murderer in Four Acts” was selected by Cannes Film Festival committee to be screened along with other 19 features from all around the world. Having set the record overseas, the film is now ready to be distributed within Indonesia and we got the first taste of it with the trailer. Starring Marsha Timothy as the lead role of Marlina, it is based on a true story happening in the land of East Nusa Tenggara. Marlina is a young widow who lives in a remote hill and she lives peacefully until one day a group of bandit breaks into her house to rape her and steal her cattle. Having been faced with a menacing situation, Marlina cleverly outsmarts them by killing the gang first, including the chief. She uses a rather odd method by decapitating their heads. She then sets out to fin her own emancipation, but the shadow from the headless ghosts keep haunting her.
Produced by Cinesurya Pictures in collaboration with Kaninga Pictures, the script is written by famed director Garin Nugroho and produced by Rama Adi and Fauzan Zidni. This marks the third film feature by Mouly Surya after her previous works like “Fiksi” that is written by Joko Anwar and “What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love”. This film was chosen to be screened during a program of Cannes Film Festival called ‘Director’s Fortnight’. According to Rolling Stone Indonesia, the program that is happening from 18 – 21 May 2017 sees 19 long feature films and 10 short films being screened. With another remarkable international recognition in her record, 36-year-old Mouly Surya shows a bright future of Indonesia’s future female filmmaker.
